5 Tips for Hosting Successful Crawfish Boils in Colorado!

5 Tips for Hosting Successful Crawfish Boils in Colorado!

To give you some background on why we do crawfish boils in CO –  I am a local CO Native, but Guy; however is from NOLA and crawfish boils are a staple if you are from the south. We use to rent our crawfish pot to have the party, but are family has learned how much we love throwing boils we were gifted a pot for a wedding gift; We even had a crawfish boil for our engagement party.  At this point in our lives, we have thrown at least a dozen crawfish boils in Colorado, so to say the least we have become CO Crawfish Boil masters and know how to throw down!!! This past weekend we ordered and ate 50lbs just for the 4 of us!

So if you are wanting to throw a crawfish boil in Colorado here are 5 tips before you get started:

1. Know What Crawfish is and Enjoy Eating Crawfish – also called crayfish and mudbugs – farmed or caught in fresh water. They are tiny little lobsters and their tails our delicious. Veteran crawfish eaters even suck the juices from their heads during a feast.

2. Have all the proper Boil materials: 20+ gallon cooking pot , burner/ 5gallon propane, paddle for stirring, table and newspaper for eating and clean-up. Ingredients you will need: Live crawfish, seasoning boil mix (no msg) , lemon juice , garlic , potatoes, corn, onions, other extras, but not necessary, artichokes, andouille sausage, shrimp, whatever you want to add to the pot.

3. Fresh crawfish ordered from Louisiana Crawfish Company – pick your poundage and they overnight ship them in dormant state ( shipping price included in price per pound ) ; just remember to check them when they arrive – if you plan on having the boil the next day just add a damp rag, ice and keep them in a cool place until you are ready for them the next day – and poke holes in bottom of styrofoam so box drains and keep away from all 4 legged friends!!!! (We have had like 12 plus crawfish boils in Colorado and our boxer dog Tae enjoyed/ destroyed 30 pounds to herself one year, she had bad gas for days) Another Tip: NEVER order crawfish on the last day of the season or for July 4th weekend – being a holiday weekend you are asking for trouble; 80+lbs died at Fedex a few years back because they arrived late and fed ex was closed the next day and they never arrived for delivery. We received a call once they were opened from fed ex saying our package was waiting to be picked up and it was smelly…duh!

4. Find an experienced cook who has thrown a boil before -When it come to cooking crawfish, timing is everything from time spent boiling to wait time soaking up all the goodness and knowing and adding the right amount of seasoning into the boil is a must too. Find an expert to cook and you will enjoy every bite!

5. Must have Good Beer On Hand & Enjoy – Come Hungry – Leave Happy and Full!! Side Tip: add a donation jar to encourage friends and family to reimburse you for the troubles of providing such fun and deliciousness.
