How to compost things around the house for more sustaining ways

5 ways to compost at home & 5 ways to up your composting game all around the house.

Compost

/ˈkämˌpōst/

(n.) Organic Material that is no longer wanted for its original purpose but can be used in its decaying basic form as a carbon or nitrogen that will be broken down aerobically or anaerobically to be used again as a fertilizer in agriculture.

We are not sure why composting has become less than normal when over 40% of the average trash bins content is compostable. Keeping organic matter out of landfills is essential because it will help slow and or stop the production of methane gas that occurs inside landfills when organic matter gets trapped without access to oxygen which is key a element when it comes to the breaking down process. This in turn is why landfills and methane gas production is a major contributor to global warming.

So here are 5 ways to start composting at home:

  1. Use an Outside Rotating compost Tumbler (It freezes sometimes in the winter but really does break down organic material quickly with the aerobic processes that are created with each rotation)
  2. An inside composting bin with Bokashi mix and bin. We have never done this anaerobic compost method but it speeds up the compost process with Bokashi’s patented formula of premium compost accelerator (bokashi bran) is a careful mix of bran and molasses, and is infused with billions of beneficial bokashi microorganisms that is sprinkled onto of your organic waste and sealed up to breakdown. 3. Build and designate your backyard Compost Pile outside designed with reused shipping pallets
  4. Join a Local Compost Collection Service
  5. Get Chickens and/ or worms (see below for more info)

You can do 1 or all 5 of the composting ways listed above but composting needs to be a normal thing and apart of your daily routine if you want to consider your self a permaculture entrepreneur. By committing to composting from now on we can all be apart of the solution to our world’s pollution problem. If we all start composting again we can get past the weird, taboo ideologies that have been instilled into us by the media that rotting food is dangerous and or to be discarded in a plastic bag and to never be looked at again.

Now here is 5 ways to up your composting game all around the house.

(1) Add compost designated bins in all bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room areas. Seriously besides few plastic bottles from each of these rooms most things are compostable from Kleenex’s to laundry dryer lent balls, all these different types of papers are ready to be turned in your compost pile

(2) Stop throwing food down the drain or in the trash and start composting it with worms and/or chickens. Chickens are carnivores and cannibals, they love the color red. Just reduce the amount of moldy bread/ food thrown their way because hens are prone to respiratory infections. Save the moldy stuff for your worms or other composting bins. (Chickens could be fine eating moldy bread, I am just following other chicken keeper’s advice )

(3) Get worms to help you get rid of more compostable goodies . Plus they help create black gold fertilizer for spring gardening needs. “We Got Worms” is not just Harry and Loyd’s Pet Store from Dum and Dummer but honestly one of the best ways to get rid of that container you forgot about in your fridge of god knows what but just avoid citrus, onion and meat in your worm farm. In 10 weeks time you have the best fertilizer in the world to help boost your garden production.

(4) Get chickens , seriously, we had to tell you twice! Chickens help get rid of spoiled meat and other goodies that otherwise take a pretty long time to compost. Plus they lay eggs which is an excellent protein source and once you have your own chicken’s laying eggs you well never want store bought eggs again. Trust me you will notice the difference between your eggs and your store bought dozen.

(5) Save and Use your cardboard boxes for spring gardening. Seriously, break down all your amazon boxes and cardboard that enters your property and save for composting and lasagna layer garden beds. And/or reuse for other storing purposes. Always eliminate throwing a box away when you can.

By now, I hope you are starting to see how easy it is to start implementing various composting methods into your daily routine. Keep making permaculture popular.
