The next step to growing your own food successfully this year is finding your trusted seed source. It is very important to support non-gmo seed companies. GMO seeds mean genetically modified organisms, this means at the gene level scientists have gone into the seeds and altered the gene expression in seeds to be able to do different things.  They are not cross breeding for specific favorable traits but altering the seeds in various ways. For instance Bt corn has a specific bacterium expression that allows for less insecticide which sounds like a good thing but the pollen from this Bt corn lands on milkweed in the area and it unintentionally impacts the monarch caterpillar population because they too are insects. So just with this one example you can see how GMOs are to one-dimensional when it comes to solving the worlds problems we need to start think holistically with a multi-faceted approached that takes into consideration every species in and around the habitat of the plant being grown.   The scary thing is GMO seed manufactures are doing this with each “New Seed” that hits the market. Altering it’s gene expression to combat one problem while not considering the consequences to what this does to the habitat and organisms that consume the plant. If you want to know more about the unintentional consequences I suggest reading this article.
