What are Microgreens and Sprouts: Our Definition: Microgreens and Sprouts are baby seedlings of any plant variety that can be grown year around, (some will taste better that others) grown/sprouted densely together. Sprouts are like the babies and micro greens are the Tweens of a plants development. Sprouts are grown without a medium, where micgrogreens need a growing medium like soil. Sprouts are kept moist at room temperature until they germinate and the entire sprout is consumed, including the root.  Microgreens are harvested and eaten after they have established roots and opened their cotyledons (first set of leaves) but only the stems and leaves are consumed. Microgreens are harvested above their roots.  Both can be grown using indirect natural light that takes 5-8 days for sprouts to be harvestable, just pop those babies in your mouth and 7-14 days for micro greens to be harvestable just snip with scissors. These baby plants are nutrient dense foods and can be up to 40% more nutritious than its full grown variety. Microgreens are definitively more nutrient dense, but are often eaten in small quantities used as garnishes and can be expensive, up to $30/lb. Sprouts on the other hand are definitely cheaper, you are likely to eat way more and are probably the most nutrition you can get per-unit-cost of food.

Micro Greens and Sprouts Defined by Jonny Select Seeds:  Through years of trial and selection, we’ve developed a line of microgreens noted for diverse flavors, colors, and textures. For growers, microgreens are increasingly popular because they’re a year-round crop with fast turnaround, relatively easy to grow, and start-up costs are low. For consumers, they offer convenience, plate appeal, and nutritional value — perfect for chefs, food enthusiasts, families, and the health conscious. See our Microgreens Comparison Chart to compare varieties.

Seed Variety Is important: It is not recommended to just use any seeds to grow sprouts- specific seeds meant for spouting have been through additional testing to avoid   We use Johnny select seeds – search micro green seeds and they have certain varieties available. The micro green seeds are untreated and checked for food borne illnesses.
