How to Grow Microgreens in 2023

Growing Microgreens is the 5th most important thing you can do for your diet plan, routine and wallet this year.

We are in weird times where going to the grocery store is a completely normal part of our weekly routine if not even daily routine and growing microgreens or any food has almost become taboo. A daily grocery store run is not only fine but, it is actually convenient as fuck. We are not one to judge and also partake in this activity. The real problem is we are also in a time where people think it might be unsafe to drink raw milk, eat meat and go apple picking. Well that my friend is the definition of a domesticated human. When we completely stop relying on our community and ourselves for a little bit of the food we eat and only eat food we can buy at the grocery store we are actually apart of the agriculture problem.

Being aware of the food we eat starts by knowing some fundamentals on nutrition. Which means you need to start caring about what the fuck you are eating and drinking and what it does to your body.  So let’s have a little nutrition 101 lessons from Witch Dr. Traconanda right now.

All food wants to be converted into glucose if it can but the more simple the sugar or more processed the sugar the quicker it spikes your blood sugar leaving you tired and hungry again.  If you can eat low glycemic whole foods you will not spike your blood sugar and you will feel energized and satiated. “You are what you eat” is the best advice to live by.

Another, important nutrition tid bit as far as I understand is by incorporating healthy fat into your diet first thing you allow your body to stay in ketosis and use fat as it’s fuel source before using your glucose system which is the primary system that your body uses as soon as you start eating or drinking depending on what you are consuming.

Black coffee is one way to not break fast but I don’t like black coffee at all. I add a table spoon of butter and a table spoon of local honey (both are low glycemic, and honey is the closest food that resembles human blood) So, I think if you are gonna add anything to your coffee these two are not something that would take you out of your fast and is only adding pure nutritional magic into the cup of jo. (But this is probably just wishful thinking, which isn’t the worst thing to do in terms of tricking the mind and body) .

Being that I have a healthy insulin response from being athletic my entire life, I don’t have to worry to much about whether I drink my coffee black or not. If however you are facing any symptoms of central metabolic syndrome or on the obese side, then the time is now to commit to intermittent fasting, black coffee and whole food eating.

Over the years, I have developed a high nutritional IQ. Thanks to my parents always providing food of all kinds which allowed me to never crave anything instead make choices about eating. Plus, my high school and college health class curriculums and pure interest on the topic of nutrition and optimizing human performance and recovery over the years, are also reasons why making the healthy decision comes easy to me.

If I could breakdown a nutritionally sound diet for anyone into 6 easy steps it is this.

1. Drink Water with a splash of ACV every morning plus a mineral packet

2. Get good Sleep 6-8 hours every night maybe even more.

3. Walk 2 times a day in morning light and afternoon sunset light

4. Eat once maybe twice a day, stress free, exactly what you want to eat

5. Grow your own Microgreens

6. Eliminate sugar as much as possible.

Of course there is more, like don’t eat processed foods, eliminate fried foods as much as possible (but I fucking love me some fried chicken and French fries), grow your own kitchen garden in the summer, eat local food, pesticide free produce, support your local farmer and beekeeper, etc.

There is a lot to it but if you can realize all the sugar and processed food is what is keeping you tired, fat, sick, fundamentally unhealthy then maybe you will see that spending more on this product but eliminating the shitty food is worth it all because you won’t feel the need to see your doctor or miss work because you will feel like a fucking badass.

Your health decisions are apart of your human experience and journey on this planet and it’s best to have an open mind when it comes to all of it.

Culturally, we have become dependent on what we are shown and aware of, but if you break through to the other side and look in to self care, eating is a part of understanding who you are on this planet. We are all suppose to grow our own food or be connected to the food chain in some way and growing micrgreens is an easy way to start and an easy way to get superfood in to your diet. That is why it is number 5 for best diet plan.

When you grow your own food, you are taking back control of your food system in some way.

The food chain is broken by a power struggle with big food and big ag so the little guys are getting scraped under the rug. But this metaphorical rug only exists if we allow it.

We are the little guys and learning how to grow your own food is the best thing you can do for yourself and your community. This skill is what will provide for the long haul. You can lose your job and find a new one but if there is no more food in the grocery store (and at this point the food in the store can be toxic in more ways than one) that you can’t or shouldn’t even eat it .

Learning the skill of growing microgreens is something that brings food on the table which is as good as money my friend. And when you live healthy you spend less on hospital bills and more on all the things you want to be doing.

I try to grow Microgreens for my husband and myself once a month if I can get on it and put it into the routine. It take like 1-2 hours of my time in terms of tray preparation, seed sowing and initial watering but after that it takes very minimal effort and we all need that in our lives when it comes to accomplishing our health goals. The other bonus is there is always an abundance and I have a few friends that love eating Microgreens just as much as we do.

Also, I grow microgreens because it brings living food into my house and it almost feels like I have a mini edible terrarium growing that is going to provide some of the best produce on the mother fucking block my boy. It’s also a great way to bring the vibrancy of summer into the home during these long cold winter days. Plus the extra grow lights help out all my indoor plants when it comes to these long winter nights and 7am sunrises the added indoor light is needed and appreciated by all.
