Take 5 for Friday 3/29 & 4/5/19 – A blog Highlighting Permaculture Projects, People, Podcasts, Books, and More!

A Snowy day in March leaves the chicken searching for bugs and fresh green prairie spring grass soon to arrive. Side note that’s the New compost bin that we have been working on, Just 1 of the many projects on the boomstead.
  1. Permaculture Projects Going Down @The Boomstead: Sauna Day 11-14 have been the best way to get our week started on Monday nights and Tuesday mornings.  I want to build a sauna at our Denver location too!! We are going to start working more on the pond garden this weekend which really means moving a large pile of soil from one side of the property over to another side of the property and into the pond garden layout Guy has come up with. Thank God for our Polaris. We have been trying to wrap this Zone 1-2 pond project that stores our overflow pond (that serves as the bees water source) , that connects to our 3rd swale and it is loaded with perennial plants like purple cone flower, choke cherry, borage, service berry, aspens, and we will add 5-10 trees once we are ready for them this year. We also made a new compost bin, with hopes of a better turnout no pun intended. We don’t turn our compost, which we should to build more heat but our biggest problem with compost creation on our land has been adding water. We don’t use water for this purpose with not having a well and getting it delivered. Colorado prairie is a very dry climate in Zone 5b and windy, harsh, dry cold winters and hot summers leaves your compost needing a lot of attention which “ain’t nobody got time for that.”  This Year to try out something new with composting, we used chicken wire, metal fencing rods and landscape fabric to make a new bin that will help hold in the moisture when we do add water more frequently this year. (see picture above and I’ll post a video this weakend on instagram) The chickens lay about 5+ Dozen eggs a week right now, We only need a dozen. If you are local email or DM @theboomstead and claim your @theboomstead $5dozen weekly egg order with your mile high micro greens delivery! . Only 4 of 5 spots left!

2. Podcast Power Up with these 3 podcasts: Almost 30, 5am miracle and Entrepreneurs on Fire. All 3 podcasts are worth listening to every week. And one suggestion if you think you can handle it? Is x2 the speed the podcast is delivered. Turn a 30 minute podcast into 15 minutes, take and hour and make it 30 minutes this is “Time Bending” at its best. I love listening to most podcasts sped up because I can get more content into my brain for half the amount of time if not less.

3. Books for Booming Productivity:  do less – A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Busy Moms by Kate Northrup ; Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher and Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits and Break Bad Ones by James Clear. I am a very slow reader, I find audible subscription to be my best reading friend and I can finish books super fast when I speed up the content x2.

4. Geoff Lawton’s The Father of Online Permaculture: Check out Part 1 & 2 Patterning with Animal Systems. Animal systems can be used to clear gardens for permanent systems, or they can be used as part of system cycles to rip up organic matter, eat insects, eat weed seeds, and increase fertility. All the while the animals are doing what they love to do while also providing eggs and meat. Here, at Zaytuna Farm, we are cell grazing with cattle inside of swale trenches and Muscovy ducks on top of swale mounds.  Part 1 & Part 2

5. The Denver Urban Boomstead News. Our New Micro Farm Location will be open this spring 5/1. Our bees arrive 5/4 and our Egg Laying chooks will move from Agate to Denver that weekend or the week after. We need to get the indoor part of the farm operational and ready for the micro greens and then we will focus on the outdoor grow for annual herbs, chickens and so much more farm fun. We are excited to be providing local food for Colorado restaurants and residents. Tune in @theboomstead to get boomin’ insights on homesteading, life enhancement and more!
